AnandTech Shuts Down After 27 Years

Here’s a bit of news that’s gonna hit home for a lot of tech enthusiasts, AnandTech, the go-to site for all things computer hardware, is closing its doors after nearly 30 years. Ryan Smith, the site’s last editor-in-chief, dropped the news in a heartfelt farewell post, saying, “…Few things last forever, and the market for written tech journalism is not what it once was — nor will it ever be again.” It’s a tough pill to swallow, but Smith makes it clear that the time has come for AnandTech to step aside and let the next wave of tech journalists take the stage.

AnandTech isn’t just any old tech site—it was founded back in 1997 by Anand Lal Shimpi, who built it from the ground up into a trusted resource for anyone who cared about what was going on inside their computers. Shimpi eventually left journalism in 2014 to join Apple, where he’s been a part of the team that brought us the groundbreaking M series Apple Silicon chips. That move alone tells you the kind of expertise AnandTech was known for.

What made AnandTech stand out was its dedication to deep, detailed reviews. Whether you were building a custom PC, diving into the nitty-gritty of the latest motherboard, or just curious about the newest chip on the block, AnandTech was the place to go. Their analysis wasn’t just for the average tech nerd—it became a crucial resource for academics, fellow journalists, and anyone with a passion for hardware.

Of course, whenever a beloved site shuts down, the big question is always, “What happens to all that content?” Well, there’s some good news on that front. Ryan Smith reassured fans that the site’s publisher, Future PLC, will keep the entire archive up and running indefinitely. Plus, the active AnandTech Forums, which have been a hub for discussions and community, will continue to operate, with Future’s team stepping in to keep things moderated.
