The Target store in East Palo Alto will permanently close its doors next month. The exact closing date has not been disclosed, but according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) report, the closure will take effect on September 28.
The WARN report indicates that 85 employees will be affected by the closure, with the notice issued on July 29. East Palo Alto Mayor Antonio Lopez commented that the shutdown reflects a broader trend of declining sales in the big box retail sector.
As of Sunday afternoon, Target has not provided a reason for the decision to close the East Palo Alto location. Situated at 1775 E Bayshore Road, this Target has been a popular shopping spot for Stanford students due to its proximity, approximately three miles from the campus. It, along with the Mountain View location, is one of the nearest Targets to the university.
Last fall, Target announced the closure of three other Bay Area stores in San Francisco, Oakland, and Pittsburg, citing organized retail crime as a contributing factor.
