Google Photos is rolling out a cool new feature called “Ask Photos”

Google Photos is rolling out a cool new feature called “Ask Photos” this Thursday, giving some users in the U.S. early access. It’s a major upgrade to how we search for pictures in the app, thanks to AI. Before, you could search for people, places, or things in your photos, but now you can ask more detailed questions, and the AI will help you find exactly what you’re looking for.

This new feature uses Google’s Gemini AI model, which means it can understand more about what’s going on in your photos. For example, instead of just searching for a person’s face, you can ask the AI things like, “What themes did I use for my kid’s last four birthday parties?” and it’ll look through your photos and tell you.

The feature is part of Google Labs for now, so it’s still being tested. But Google says they’re sticking to their AI Principles, meaning your private photo data won’t be used for ads. However, some of the questions users ask might be reviewed by Google staff to help improve the AI, but the photos themselves won’t be seen unless you ask for support or report an issue.
