Google Wallet to Support California Digital ID Cards for Android Users

California DMV to Introduce Digital ID Cards in Google Wallet for Android Users

California is expanding its support for digital Driver’s License and ID Cards by adding compatibility with Google Wallet on Android, alongside the existing Apple Wallet for iPhone users.

Currently, the California DMV is testing this feature for Android users without requiring them to download the CA DMV Wallet app. Instead, users can add their ID directly within Google Wallet by following these steps:

1. Open the Wallet App and click the “Add to Wallet” button.
2. Select “ID Card” from the list.
3. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the setup and add the mDL to Wallet.

After adding, the digital ID will appear in the app, usable at select TSA terminals at San Francisco (SFO), San Jose (SJC), and Los Angeles (LAX) airports. Despite this digital option, users are advised to carry their physical DL/ID as well.

This feature is currently in beta testing with state DMV employees and is not yet available to the public. Information about the pilot program has been temporarily removed.

Ohio might also follow soon with Google Wallet support, having already added iPhone compatibility. As of now, Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, and Maryland support digital IDs in Google Wallet.
